Join CLA for an extended length program covering the intricacies of literary publishing contracts. The day will begin with a presentation by attorney Jonathan Kirsch, who will discuss the standard components of a publishing deal with a focus on real world examples from sample agreements. The presentation will also address recent changes in practices due to developments in law, technology, and publishing markets. After a half hour break, attorney Paul Levine will provide an in-depth look at four of the most common compensation arrangements for authors: advances, royalties, first and second serialization rights, and best-seller bonuses. The presentation will cover the way these arrangements are typically structured as well as the pros and cons of each model.
This program will be presented at an advanced level and is geared towards attorneys, but all members of the community are welcome to attend.

Jonathan Kirsch, Esq. is a publishing and intellectual property attorney based in Los Angeles, an expert witness on publishing industry matters, an Adjunct Professor on the faculty of New York University’s Professional Publishing Institute, and a lecturer and consultant on publishing matters. Kirsch’s books include Kirsch’s Handbook of Publishing Law and Kirsch’s Guide to the Book Contract, both of which are now in revision for a new and updated single-volume edition from SilmanJames Press. Kirsch is also the book editor of The Jewish Journal, a longtime book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, and the author of 13 books of history and biography, including the newly published The Short, Strange Life of Herschel Grynszpan: A Boy Avenger, a Nazi Diplomat, and a Murder in Paris (W. W. Norton/Liveright).
