A Series Racks Up Rights Sales

Great Reads Books of Bellaire, TX, reports foreign rights sales for two titles in its Jesus Thief series. Author/publisher J.R. Lankford sold the fourth book, The Covert Messiah, to Eksmo of Moscow for a 2014 Russian edition, and the first one, The Jesus Thief, to Saida de Emergencia of Lisbon for Portuguese editions to be sold in Portugal and Brazil. Last year, both Eksmo and Istanbul’s Maya Katap acquired Books 1 through 3—The Jesus ThiefThe Secret Madonna, and The Sacred Impostor—for editions in Turkish.

In the Media

Berrett-Koehler’s The Business Solution to Poverty: Designing Products and Services for Three Billion New Customers, by Paul Polak and Mal Warwick, received a starred review in a fall issue of Publishers Weekly.

Chelsea Green’s Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Food Rights: The Escalating Battle over Who Decides What We Eat, written by David E. Gumpert, was reviewed in a recent issue of the Harvard Business School Alumni Bulletin.

Laura Robb, co-owner of the Seattle startup Mark House Publishing, was profiled in Northwest Prime Time’s print and online editions (northwestprimetime.com) this fall. “It’s delightful who you get to meet in this kind of work—it’s not only your own imaginary characters, but plenty of other very imaginative individuals,” the former teacher said. “Nobody ever told me that business could be fun.”

Linda Carlson writes the Spotlight column from Seattle.

Spotlight is compiled by Linda Carlson (lindacarlson.com), who welcomes members’ news of notable special sales and licensing deals, significant recent media coups, movie and television options, and other achievements at linda@ibpa-online.org.

Please report on how you accomplished something as well as on what you accomplished so others can benefit from your experience as they applaud your achievements.

Note: We must have URLs for accessing any media coverage you’d like us to mention.

Please submit your news for Spotlight in the text of your email (no attachments) and remember to include:

● your name and title

● the name of your publishing company as it appears in the IBPA membership directory

● your email address

● URLs for the archived editions of any media stories you’re telling us about

Since information for this column is needed about eight weeks in advance of an issue’s publication date, news you submit by December 14 can be considered for the February 2014 and later issues. News that is time-sensitive should be directed to lisa@ibpa-online.org for consideration for the IBPA e-newsletter, Independent Publishing Now.
